The Maldives recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals of over 4500 tourists in a single day.
The Honorable Minister of Tourism Dr. Abdulla Mausoom stated, “Another record day of daily tourist arrivals to the Maldives since border reopening. Today we surpass the beautiful number of 4,567 tourists on a single day. Thank you ALL for your contributions towards Maldives tourism recovery.”
Since borders reopened on 15 July 2020 in the Maldives, the tourism industry steadily recovers from the effects of the global pandemic. The Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has initiated numerous marketing campaigns as well, to promote the Maldives as the ideal destination to visit during these times, especially due to its unique geographical structure that allows natural isolation and prevents much spreading of COVID-19. The Maldives has since welcomed the 500,000th tourist to arrive for the year 2020.
Total tourist arrivals for the year till 17th of December is 501,674, with a daily average of 1999 tourists. Russia takes the top for tourist arrival markets for the Maldives with 46,065 arrivals, followed closely by Italy with 45,645, India with 44,268 tourists, the United Kingdom with 38,285 arrivals, and China, Germany, France, the United States to name a few.
From all accommodation facilities, 182 guesthouses are operating as of 17th December 2020, with 138 resorts, 129 safari vessels, and 9 hotels. More facilities steadily reopen and recommence operations as they take up health and safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of guests and staff.

Tourist arrivals increased notably during the 5th month (56,331 - from 16th Nov - 15th Dec), contributing to approx. 50% of the total arrivals, compared to the whole of the previous 4 months.
