The Maldives has ranked as the 3rd most-searched destination on the Travelzoo for the year 2020.

A lot of attention was shown to the Maldives after the COVID-19 pandemic started, as some popular resorts in the destination focused on promoting their properties through the US website Travelzoo. Numerous 5-star resorts including Park Hyatt Maldives, You & Me Maldives, and KIHAA Maldives partnered with Travelzoo to provide Travelzoo members with information on the unique, relaxing experiences to be had at the resorts. The advertising received great interest and feedback which contributed to the Maldives moving from 40th in international searches to 3rd, which is a 275% increase according to the website Travelzoo. This led to more than 73,000 room nights for the year 2021 and beyond.

Travelzoo holds over 30 million members insider deals and one-of-a-kind experiences personally reviewed by one of their deal experts around the globe, with the pulse for outstanding travel, entertainment, and lifestyle experiences. For over 20 years Travelzoo has worked in partnership with more than 5,000 top travel suppliers—a long-standing relationship providing Travelzoo members access to irresistible deals.

Gabe Saglie, Senior Communications Manager for Travelzoo, said, “One fascinating fallout from the COVID pandemic is the way it’s put more of the world within reach for American travelers. Destinations that were once off the radar are now within reach, thanks to a heightened desire to make up for lost travel in 2020 and make future travel more memorable and more special. We’ve seen that – when armed with compelling offers, flexible terms, and expert insight – Travelzoo members will enthusiastically invest in travel to exotic, luxurious, and unique destinations, like The Maldives.”

Along with other travel establishments, Visit Maldives had to alter marketing strategies and methods of communicating with potential buyers in response to the ongoing global pandemic. Thus websites and digital platforms like these provided a way to promote the Maldives in order to attract tourists, as a contribution to the ongoing recovery of the tourism economy. As a result, the Maldives welcomed more than 500,000 tourist arrivals in 2020.
