Male’ Maldives, 29th October 2023 – This year, the Maldives has seen an impressive surge in tourism, reaching a remarkable 1.5 million visitors. Data from the Ministry of Tourism, released on a Sunday, show that by the end of Saturday, a total of 1,505,366 tourists had graced the shores of the Maldives. This represents a substantial 13.4% increase when compared to the same period last year.
Russia continues to hold the top spot as the leading source market for tourists this year, with a substantial 172,472 visitors. Surprisingly, the Chinese market, which momentarily occupied the second position, has slipped down to third place. India has once again regained its standing as the second-largest source of tourists.
The top five source markets for tourism are as follows:

- China – 163,036
- United Kingdom – 121,106
- Germany – 105,962
This month, some Chinese charter flights were canceled, and local Maldivian travel agencies reported a drop in Chinese visitors over the past two months. Nevertheless, there is optimism that the Chinese New Year will bring about a resurgence in Chinese tourism.
