Male’, Maldives, 30 July 2024 – Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives has announced the launch of an innovative eco-friendly initiative aimed at repurposing used bed linens into hand cloths for public restrooms. This new program is part of the resort’s “Recycle-Reuse” initiative under the broader Sun Siyam Care program, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.

Implemented recently by the resort’s housekeeping team, the initiative gives a second life to discarded bed linens by converting them into hand cloths for public areas. This practice not only helps minimize waste but also aligns with the resort’s dedication to environmental sustainability, while also reducing costs associated with paper tissues.

The process begins with the collection of damaged bed linens, which are then brought to the in-house tailor. Each king-sized sheet is cut into approximately 60 pieces of 10×10 inch washcloths. The tailor cuts the sheets to 11×11 inches, folds the edges, and stitches them to prevent fraying. The fabric is thoroughly washed before use, ensuring cleanliness and adherence to hygiene standards. The initiative is highly efficient, relying solely on a sewing machine and skilled hands, with no chemicals involved.

To maintain hygiene, fresh and soiled washcloths are transported in separate bags to avoid cross-contamination. An 8kg washing machine is dedicated to cleaning these cloths, ensuring they meet health standards before being placed in restrooms.

Hassan Adil, General Manager at Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives, commented, “This initiative aligns with global sustainability standards and practices in the hospitality industry. By repurposing bed linens, we reduce laundry loads, leading to significant water savings. This effort supports the Sun Siyam Cares program’s goals of minimizing energy and water use, managing waste, and supporting community development while investing in renewable energy.”

Sun Siyam Olhuveli invites guests to celebrate this significant step towards sustainability. The resort continues to lead the way in responsible tourism, ensuring that its natural paradise is preserved for future generations.

Sun Siyam Resorts, operating in the Maldives and Sri Lanka, is committed to sustainability and authentic guest experiences. The group’s Sun Siyam Cares program focuses on reducing environmental impact, conserving resources, managing waste, and supporting local communities while investing in renewable energy and preserving cultural heritage.
