Male’, Maldives, 21 August 2024 – The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has made history by hosting the inaugural Women’s Edition of the Maldives Travel Conference at Hotel Jen. This groundbreaking event marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to tackle gender disparities within the Maldivian tourism sector.

In her opening speech, MATATO CEO Aminath Susan passionately addressed the urgent need to address the challenges faced by women in the tourism industry. She revealed a stark statistic—women currently represent only 5% of the workforce in the industry. However, Susan emphasized that this figure could be dramatically improved through collective action and targeted initiatives.

The conference featured a series of thought-provoking panel discussions led by seasoned women professionals from the tourism sector. These discussions delved into the unique hurdles women face in the industry, from career advancement challenges to societal perceptions. The event, which attracted a diverse audience of both men and women, provided a platform for sharing experiences, solutions, and strategies for fostering a more inclusive environment in tourism.

The presence of First Lady Madam Sajida, who graced the conference with her participation, underscored the event’s significance. In her address, the First Lady highlighted the persistent challenges that women in the Maldivian tourism industry continue to encounter, even as the sector celebrates over 50 years of success. She called for a shift in societal attitudes towards women working in tourism, particularly in resort settings, and stressed the importance of creating an environment that supports and empowers women.

To extend the impact of this landmark event, MATATO announced plans to take this initiative beyond the capital, with similar conferences planned for various provinces across the Maldives. This expansion aims to ensure that the movement towards gender equality in tourism reaches all corners of the country.

The Women’s Edition of the Maldives Travel Conference is not just a one-time event but a pivotal moment in the ongoing journey towards empowering women in the Maldivian tourism industry. It symbolizes a collective commitment to breaking down barriers and building a more equitable future for all.
