Male’, Maldives -29th March 2026 – In a meaningful step towards advancing marine conservation, Six Senses Kanuhura has partnered with the global COASTS Project—an ambitious research initiative focused on enhancing coastal resilience through the study of blue carbon ecosystems. This collaboration underscores the resort’s continued dedication to safeguarding the delicate natural environments that define the Maldives.
Supported by Horizon Europe 2023 through EUSPA Space, the COASTS Project is spearheaded by EOMAP, a Fugro company, alongside an international consortium that includes Submaris and the Maldives Space Research Organization (MSRO). The initiative spans key ecological regions across the Baltic Sea in Germany, Chausey Island in France, and the Maldives, where research is being conducted in Noonu Atoll and at Six Senses Kanuhura in Lhaviyani Atoll.
At the resort, scientific activities are centred across the lagoon and reef flat, where specialists are engaged in seagrass mapping, ecological assessments, and sediment sampling. These studies aim to deepen understanding of how seagrass meadows function as natural buffers against coastal erosion, support marine biodiversity, and act as vital carbon sinks. Insights gathered are expected to contribute to informed, science-led conservation strategies for these often-overlooked ecosystems.
Running parallel to this international collaboration, the resort’s in-house marine biologist and sustainability team are actively promoting awareness around the ecological importance of seagrass. Through interactive guest experiences and educational programmes, visitors are encouraged to explore the vital role these underwater meadows play in maintaining ocean health. By reshaping perceptions, the team hopes to inspire stronger advocacy for their protection.
Set across three private islands, Six Senses Kanuhura offers an idyllic blend of natural beauty and refined luxury. The resort features 85 elegantly designed beachfront and overwater villas, each opening onto a vibrant turquoise lagoon teeming with marine life, including resident sea turtles. Guests are invited to immerse themselves in a rich tapestry of experiences—from culinary journeys and family adventures to tranquil moments of seclusion.
Part of the Six Senses portfolio under IHG Hotels & Resorts, the brand continues to champion a philosophy rooted in sustainability, wellness, and purposeful travel. With a growing global presence, Six Senses remains committed to creating experiences that foster deeper connections between guests, local communities, and the natural world.
Through its involvement in the COASTS Project, Six Senses Kanuhura not only contributes to vital scientific research but also reinforces a forward-thinking approach to tourism—one that places environmental responsibility and long-term stewardship at its core.
