The Maldives was awarded the Best Island Destination – Asia Pacific at Travel Weekly Asia Readers’ Choice Awards 2020, which was held virtually on 11 December 2020.

The virtual award ceremony is a platform that salutes the outstanding travel suppliers in the Asia Pacific, who set new benchmarks for the future of the tourism industry. The awards highlighted industry contributions across different segments, and voters got to choose across 57 award categories.

In regard to receiving this award, the Managing Director of Visit Maldives, Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed, stated, “Receiving such an award during these unprecedented times, when the tourism industry is recovering and adjusting, will assure our visitors that the Maldives is on top of the most preferred destinations to visit.”

The award is of the many awards and accolades the Maldives has won this year, including the most prestigious World’s Leading Destination award at World Travel Awards 2020. Visit Maldives has initiated numerous marketing campaigns to contribute to the steady recovery of the tourism sector. The campaigns were used to promote the Maldives as an attractive destination, with a geographical structure that helps in preventing the spread of the coronavirus during this ongoing pandemic. The promotions were targeted at top tourist arrival markets of the Maldives, such as China, India, Japan, Australia, and Southeast Asia countries.

Some of the campaigns conducted include digital campaigns with FreakOut in Malaysia, LATTE in Australia as well as Weibo and WeChat in the China market. Additionally, global marketing campaigns with CNN and Skyscanner. The Maldives is currently open to tourists of all nationalities, with resorts, liveaboards, and guesthouses have resumed operations. Guesthouses and resorts in the greater Male’ region are also allowed to resume operations from 14th December 2020 onward.
