The Tourism Minister Honorable Dr. Abdulla Mausoom stated that all the major events that will be held in the Maldives for World Tourism Day of 2021 are expected to be held in Addu City.

During the commemoration ceremony for the 75th anniversary of the British Loyalty Wreck, Minister Mausoom expressed how the events would be hopefully held in Addu City, while the mayor of Addu, Abdulla Sodiq proposed the major events to be held in the southernmost islands as well.

World Tourism Day is celebrated ebulliently in the Maldives, however did not take place in 2020 due to implications of COVID-19. This year, the Minister expressed his optimism about being able to hold the celebrations in Addu City.

As the Maldives witnesses steady recovery in the tourism sector, following the negative impact caused by the global pandemic, numerous tourist accommodation facilities are continuing to restart operations to welcome back tourists to the destination. 141 resorts have reopened, along with 254 guesthouses, 130 safari vessels, and 11 hotels, since the end of 2020.
