Visit Maldives has launched a social media campaign targeting the Japan, as a means to strengthen the engagement with tourists as well as make Maldives a top of the mind destination for the Japanese Market. The campaign will be held from June 2021 – January 2022, the operation is expected to help increase brand awareness in Japan and it will work as a tool to reassure Japanese travelers that Maldives will remain as one of the safest destinations to travel to when the Japanese borders reopen for leisure activity.

One of the steps to be conducted during this campaign is the Official Visit Maldives social media accounts; Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, will be created separately for the Japanese Market. All of the content produced for these accounts will be in the Japanese Language as well. A holiday voucher will be offered at the beginning of the campaign to increase engagement and provide the opportunity to a lucky winner to enjoy a free holiday in Maldives. During the campaign Visit Maldives aims to reach 6 million people and promote the destination.

Maldives will be promoted as a safe haven during the social media campaign. Since Japanese travelers are currently unable to travel due to travel restrictions, Visit Maldives aims to maintain the presence of Maldives and conduct marketing activities to ensure that we remain as the most preferred destination for Japanese travelers once the restrictions are eased.

At the end of 2019, Maldives recorded 44,251 arrivals from the Japanese Market. In order to increase numbers to pre-pandemic level and keep the destination presence across the Japanese Market, Visit Maldives has planned several marketing tactics this year such as familiarization trips, marketing promotion with Tabi Muse and taking part in the Tourism Expo Japan (JATA).

Maldives reopened its borders for tourists from all around the world on 15th July 2020, after implementing rigorous procedures to ensure safety of all tourists and tourism workers. Tourists are required to fill an online health declaration form within 24 hours prior to their departure and they must have a negative PCR test which should be conducted 96 hours prior to their departure.

The administration of the COVID-19 vaccine was initiated on 1st February 2021 in the Maldives. The government provided the vaccine free of charge to all citizens and residents of this country in the upcoming months.

Visit Maldives together with the Ministry of Tourism launched “I’m Vaccinated” campaign in order to share a positive message regarding the vaccination of all staffs who are working in the tourism industry as well as to promote the initiatives undertaken to ensure the Maldives remains as one of the safest destinations in the world for travelers. The main target of this campaign is to make Maldives the first ever destination with a fully vaccinated tourism sector in the world.
