The Ministry of Tourism has announced that the Maldives has already passed the 10.7 million bed nights goals by December 15th, already exceeding the target for the year 2021 which was originally 10 million. Moreover, the tourism ministry expects the number to surpass 11 million by the end of 2021.

Maldivian tourism was severely affected due to the pandemic but it has continued thriving and improving since the opening of borders despite the challenges. The increasing number of tourists reflects the improvement in the international tourism market due to vaccinations and proper border restrictions. The number of tourist arrivals from various countries and the duration of their stay has increased exponentially.  This is another remarkable milestone reached for the Maldives tourism. At the end of October, the one-millionth tourist arrived and on 5th December, the highest tourist arrivals were recorded with 6269 arriving just that day.

In 2022, the Maldives will be marking the 50th anniversary of the start of tourism in the country. As stated by Dr. Mausoom “2022 will be celebrated as a year which brings happiness for the whole country”.
