Tourism Ministry confirmed via twitter that the number of tourist arrivals recorded in same day has been exceeded by the newly recorded number on 18th December 2021, with the arrival of 6955 tourists. The previous record was 6292 tourists noted on 5th December.
Between January and December 18th, the Maldives has recorded a total of 1,249,713 tourists, recording 74,498 tourist arrivals in the span of December. India remains at the top as the number one source market making up 22.5% of total arrivals for the year 2021.
The Maldives was also awarded World’s Leading Destination title at the World Travel Awards held virtually December 16th. This is the second time the Maldives won the World’s Leading Destination in a row. The Maldives managed to secure the title last year during one of the most challenging periods faced by the tourism industry.
