Male’, Maldives, 2nd August 2023 – Sichuan Airlines has resumed flights to the Maldives, Connecting Chengdu and the Maldives with three weekly flights. The resumption flight, carrying 186 passengers, landed at Velana International Airport with a special water salute, symbolizing the revival of tourism connections.

The airline is resuming flights after 7 long years. The last flight was operated on 23rd March 2016.

This move is expected to significantly boost Maldives’ tourism and economic growth, as the Chinese market has historically been crucial for the country’s tourism industry. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and temporary closure of China’s borders, Chinese tourism played a vital role in driving the Maldives’ tourism sector. Since the reopening of borders earlier this year, Chinese tourism has been steadily increasing, now ranking as the fourth largest source market for the Maldives
