Chinese Market Surges Ahead as Maldives Welcomes Over 100,000 Visitors

Male’, Maldives -9th April 2026 – The Maldives continues to strengthen its position as a premier global travel destination, with the Chinese market emerging as a clear frontrunner in 2026. According to the latest figures released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, Chinese tourist arrivals have surpassed the significant milestone of 100,000 visitors, making China the first source market to achieve this benchmark this year.

As of 7 April, a total of 100,185 travellers from China had arrived in the Maldives, accounting for an impressive 15 per cent of the 684,908 international visitors recorded so far. This notable achievement highlights the sustained demand from Chinese travellers and reinforces the country’s enduring appeal across key Asian markets.

While China leads the rankings, other traditional markets continue to demonstrate robust performance. Russia remains a major contributor with 84,739 arrivals, followed by the United Kingdom with 65,105 visitors. European markets also maintain a strong foothold, with Italy and Germany contributing 59,396 and 46,245 tourists respectively, reflecting the Maldives’ broad international allure.

The nation’s aviation infrastructure has played a vital role in facilitating this steady influx of travellers. Velana International Airport continues to serve as the primary gateway, handling the overwhelming majority of arrivals with over 666,000 passengers processed to date. Supporting regional connectivity, Gan International Airport and Maafaru International Airport have also accommodated a growing number of international visitors, ensuring seamless access across the archipelago.

Accommodation trends reveal a clear inclination towards the Maldives’ renowned luxury hospitality sector. Resorts remain the preferred choice, welcoming more than 400,000 guests so far this year. Meanwhile, guesthouses have attracted upwards of 100,000 visitors, offering a more intimate and locally immersive experience. Traditional hotels have also contributed to the sector’s diversity, hosting over 18,000 travellers.

This wide spectrum of accommodation is underpinned by a well-developed tourism infrastructure, with 1,298 operational properties collectively offering more than 67,000 beds nationwide. Such capacity ensures that the Maldives can cater to a variety of travel preferences, from ultra-luxury escapes to boutique and budget-friendly stays.

With strong performance across multiple markets and continued investment in infrastructure, the Maldives is well-positioned to sustain its growth trajectory. For travellers seeking idyllic island experiences, the destination remains as captivating as ever—now more accessible and diverse in its offerings than before.
