MATI Convenes 36th Annual General Meeting, Reinforcing Unified Leadership for Maldives Tourism

Male’, Maldives – 15th February 2026 – The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) convened its 36th Annual General Meeting on 15 February 2026 at Kurumba Maldives, bringing together 112 members and leading stakeholders from across the country’s tourism sector. The well-attended gathering reflected the industry’s shared commitment to collaboration, good governance, and sustainable growth.

The meeting commenced with opening remarks by MATI’s Vice-Chairman, Mr. Hussain Afeef, followed by the Secretary General’s statement delivered by Mr. Ahmed Nazeer. A particularly poignant moment of the afternoon was the tribute to the late Mr. Mohamed Umar Maniku, former Chairman of MATI, who was posthumously honoured as the association’s first-ever Member of Honour. The recognition acknowledged his enduring contribution to shaping and strengthening the Maldivian tourism industry.

Members reviewed and approved key governance documents, including the minutes of the 35th AGM, the 2025 Annual Report, and the audited financial statements for the year. The 2026 budget was also endorsed, and Faris & Co LLP was reappointed as the association’s auditors for the upcoming year.

A central highlight of the AGM was the election of MATI’s Executive Board for the 2026–2029 term. Mr. Hussain Afeef was elected Chairman, with Mr. Salah Shihab and Mr. Ahmed Nazeer serving as Vice-Chairmen. Mr. Ahmed Hafeez assumed the role of Financial Controller, while Mr. Asad Ali was appointed Secretary General, supported by Deputy Secretary General Mr. Iyaz Waheed. The board also includes prominent industry representatives from leading hospitality groups, resort operators, aviation, and destination management companies, underscoring MATI’s broad-based representation across the tourism landscape.

The Ministry of Tourism and Environment presented its regulatory priorities and work plan for 2026, offering members insight into forthcoming policy directions. This was complemented by a presentation reviewing the tourism sector’s performance in 2025, highlighting resilience and continued momentum in arrivals and development.

An open discussion session provided members with the opportunity to raise key concerns and exchange views on pressing industry matters. The AGM also formally welcomed new members who joined MATI over the past year, further strengthening the association’s collective voice.

In his closing remarks, Secretary General Mr. Asad Ali emphasized the importance of unity, regulatory consistency, and a supportive policy framework to safeguard the Maldives’ position as a world-leading destination. The 36th AGM concluded on a forward-looking note, reinforcing MATI’s role as a vital platform for advocacy and industry leadership in the Maldives.
