Navigating Uncertainty: Visit Maldives and PATA Host Strategic Webinar on Global Travel Disruptions

Male’, Maldives -6th April 2026 – In a timely response to the growing challenges facing the global tourism sector, Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC), in collaboration with Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), is set to host a high-level webinar aimed at equipping industry stakeholders with strategies to navigate ongoing global uncertainties.

Titled “The Conflict Playbook for Travel – Adapt, Pivot, Lead (Maldives Edition)”, the session will take place on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 13:00 hrs Maldives Time. The initiative comes at a crucial juncture, as escalating tensions in the Middle East continue to ripple across international travel networks, reshaping aviation routes, inflating operational costs, and influencing traveller confidence worldwide.

The repercussions have been particularly significant for destinations such as the Maldives, where tourism remains heavily reliant on seamless air connectivity. Airspace restrictions across key transit corridors have resulted in extended flight durations and rerouted journeys, while jet fuel prices have surged dramatically—placing added pressure on airlines and travel providers. According to estimates by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the global tourism industry is currently facing losses of approximately USD 600 million per day in visitor spending, underscoring the urgency for adaptive strategies.

The webinar will open with welcome remarks from Noor Ahmad Hamid, followed by a keynote address from Abdulla Ghiyas, Chairperson of VMC. His address will provide critical insights into the national outlook, highlighting the immediate implications for the Maldives and outlining strategic priorities to safeguard its tourism economy.

A series of expert-led presentations will then delve into data-driven analysis and actionable solutions. Michael Shoory, Head of APAC Tourism Analysis at Tourism Economics, will explore emerging travel demand trends and market signals. Sarah Mathews, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers, will discuss identifying resilient source markets and recalibrating marketing approaches amid rising costs. Complementing this, Elizabeth Cook, Director of Marketing at E-Tourism Frontiers, will share best practices in crisis communication and maintaining destination reputation during turbulent periods.

Designed as a comprehensive and forward-thinking forum, the session will conclude with a live Q&A moderated by Paul Pruangkarn, offering participants the opportunity to engage directly with the panel of experts.

This collaborative initiative underscores VMC’s proactive approach to sustaining the Maldives’ competitive edge in an evolving global landscape. Industry partners and stakeholders are encouraged to participate and gain valuable insights to navigate the current climate with confidence and resilience.

Industry partners and stakeholders are encouraged to register in advance to secure their participation in this important session. Registration can be completed via the official webinar link: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8-EssENVQxC4wR_mR1fdyw.
