Tourism Minister Ali Waheed has stated that reinstating employees who lost their job and reviving of businesses affected by the Covid-19 pandemic will be the way forward to sustain the tourism industry.
At the 5th UNWTO crisis committee held on 28 May 2020, he further discussed on securing liquidity, reinstatement of lost jobs and business, and the importance of being prepared for a second wave of the pandemic.
The Minister expressed gratitude to the country leaders on their effort to implement measures necessary to reopen borders and articulated that the reopening must be under agreeable circumstances focusing on the safety of the people. He also highlighted that the Maldives will be reopening borders by July with safety guidelines and these will be discussed and reviewed with the stakeholders every 14 days.
The meeting was chaired by Mr. Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-General of UNWTO. Other participants of the meeting included senior officials from Spain, UAE, Greece, Kenya. Officials from WHO, ICAO, IATA, ACI, IMO, WTTC, and IMO.
