On 1st February the Maldives Airports Company (MACL) has started using the newly developed runway at the Velana International Airport (VIA) as a taxiway.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) aims to boost and smoothen the current airport operations with the use of the new runway. Previously the plane capacity was at 8 but with the new changes, up to 16 flights can be accommodated at the same time, enabling the planes to land and exit the runway without having to backtrack.

Although the runway is now in use as a taxiway, it will be used for take-off and landing by the third quarter of this year.

Velana International Airport’s new VIP terminal was opened in January. According to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the new VIP/CIP terminal can accommodate 95 people.
