Male’, Maldives, 15th May 2022 – A national survey is underway to learn how Maldivians use and value the seas, lagoons, and coral reefs. In order to be as successful as possible, the survey needs help from resorts.
The ‘Ocean Use Survey’ is headed by Noo Raajje, a program to safeguard the ocean and its resources to build a bright future for all Maldivians. The program aims to improve livelihoods, sustainably grow economies, and protect and restore ecosystem health.
The Ocean Use Survey started in December 2021. So far, more than 2,100 ocean users have responded, mapping water-based activities like fishing, recreation, tourism, and cultural use in 138 islands. While the survey has received responses from numerous ocean use sectors, the Noo Raajje team is still in need of participation from resorts.
Results from the Ocean Use Survey will inform the future Marine Spatial Plan, which the Government will use to determine which parts of the seas to protect, as part of President Solih’s commitment to protect at least 20% of Maldivian territorial waters.
The Ocean Use Survey is aiming to reach as many resorts as possible, before the survey closes at the end of June. It is important to include feedback from the tourism sector, given its importance to the Maldivian economy, and because resorts make extensive use of the sea.
