Male’, Maldives, 19th October 2022 – Vaavu Atolls Council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Lewini Hotels and Resorts to develop the first floating resort in the Maldives. The agreement was signed by the President of Vaavu Atoll Council, Mr. Shujau Ali, and the Vice President of Lewini, Dr. Varisa Limsakul. This project is the first of its kind in the island nation.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Managing Director of Lewini Hotels and Resorts, Mr. Abdulla Rasheed noted that the decision to build a floating resort was made after much consideration and extensive research of similar projects in other countries. They hope to introduce a new wow-factor for the Maldives. 

He said, “All resorts in the Maldives show the same thing and we have similar experiences everywhere. Therefore, we aim to introduce a difference and allow many foreigners to experience the Maldives with the difference.” 

Mr. Shujau further added to this, stating that such a project is possible in this age of technology and bringing innovative change will elevate the tourism, boosting both the tourism sector and development of the vaavu atoll. Furthermore, it will also create more job opportunities as well. 

The resort will be developed on 6,038sqm of a lagoon near V. Rakeedhoo and is expected to have about 40 rooms, each of which will showcase the underwater beauty of the Maldives.  In addition to this, the resort will also feature  5 restaurants and 2 staff accommodation buildings. It is expected to take 3 years for the project to be completed, with work set to start within 36 months of the agreement signing.
