Male’, Maldives, 3rd July 2023 – Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives) offered an exciting and informative workshop titled “Healing the Earth” for the participants of the Visit Maldives Storytellers’ Conference 2023. This was one of the three workshops held during the conference to explore different aspects of the Maldives. The highly-anticipated session on conservation and sustainability was led by Ms Kate Sheridan, the resident marine biologist at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, where the session was held.

Participants spent a few hours at this breakout session learning about coral conservation efforts. They learned the intricate details of the role of corals in creating habitats for marine life, nurturing the balance of marine ecosystems, and protecting shorelines from erosion. They also learned the threats faced by corals today, including bleaching, ocean acidification, and overfishing. Afterwards, participants took part in a planting session, learning how to plant coral fragments on a frame and nurture them into healthy colonies. They also had the opportunity to snorkel in the house reef and explore the existing coral frames underwater, reinforcing their commitment to preserving these natural treasures.

This breakout session achieved the objective of highlighting local sustainable practices, such as coral propagation and coral frame construction, and it gave the opportunity for participants to explore the profound interconnection between the natural environment and the prosperity of the Maldivian tourism industry.

“I learned about the significance of coral reefs and I learned about the initiatives taken by the Maldives tourism industry in addressing these environmental concerns. Witnessing these environmental initiatives gives me hope for the future”, stated one participant after the workshop.

The ‘Healing the Earth’ breakout session explored the interconnectedness between the natural environment and the success of the Maldives tourism industry. As a nation heavily reliant on tourism for our economy, the industry’s prosperity is intimately tied to the health of the marine environment. Through this illuminating session, participants were able to develop a profound appreciation for the beauty, and fragility, of the Maldives’ marine ecosystem, inspiring them to take action in its protection
