Male’, Maldives, 14th January 2024 – Xiamen Air is launching direct flights to the Maldives, a significant move revealed after President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent state visit to China. This marks a crucial step in increasing Chinese tourism to the Maldives.

President Dr. Muizzu, engaged in high-level discussions during his visit, emphasized the focus on boosting the tourism sector. He stated, “Discussions at the highest level were held to increase flights, and Xiamen Air is set to start flights this spring.” This is promising for the Maldivian tourism industry, actively working to diversify and expand its visitor base.

The President also mentioned plans by other airlines to increase direct flights, part of a strategy to double the number of Chinese tourists, a target predating the global health crisis. Before the pandemic, the Maldives experienced a significant influx of Chinese tourists, making it a crucial market for the nation’s tourism sector.

Up until now, only one Chinese airline operated direct flights to the Maldives from Beijing. The introduction of Xiamen Air is expected to streamline travel and contribute significantly to the post-pandemic recovery and growth of the tourism industry.
