Austrian Airlines to resume operation to the Maldives with two weekly flights

The flag carrier of Austria, Austrian Airlines, is to resume operations to the Maldives starting from 25 October, with two weekly flights from Vienna International Airport and Velana International Airport.

Austrian Airlines is the flag carrier of Austria and a subsidiary of the Lufthansa Group. The airline is headquartered on the grounds of Vienna International Airport in Schwechat, where it also maintains its hub. With over 60 years of experience in aviation, Austrian Airlines has a route network focused on particularly, Central and Eastern Europe with around 40 destinations. As Austria’s largest airline as well, its global route network is dispersed across 130 destinations with 360 flights operating per day. It is also intensively working on introducing rapid antibody tests for passengers in order to restore the freedom to travel even before a possible vaccination solution is developed.

Chief Operating Officer, Jens Ritter said, “The current travel restrictions comprise a burden on the entire tourism sector. We need comprehensive testing for travelers and have to reconcile the freedom to travel and infection prevention so that we will be able to cut back on travel restrictions and quarantine obligations,”

The flights are expected to contribute to the tourism industry of the Maldives, as the sector declined due to inflictions caused by the global pandemic. However, with contributions from numerous marketing campaigns as well, the tourism industry is already in steady recovery, as the Maldives witnesses a surge in arrivals since borders were reopened on 15 July 2020.
