Looking at the tourist arrival statistics, as of 29th January, 122,575 total arrivals were recorded which shows a 45.7% growth compared to numbers from 2021 January. Arrival numbers have kept their momentum as an average of 4227 tourists are recorded per day. Tourists are seen spending their holidays for a longer duration, extending the average duration from 8.7 days recorded in 2021 to 9 days recorded in 2022.
As of 29th January 2022, there are 53,942 operational beds. This includes 167 resorts, 805 guesthouses, 157 safari vessels, 13 hotels, and 1 homestay property.
Russia has continued to remain the top source market since the 1st of January 2022, with a total of 18.1 % market capacity. Following is the United Kingdom in the second position, with a 9.8% market share. The third-ranking is India, with a surprising 8.4% market share as India dominated the source market for all of 2021. Following India, there is Italy, Germany, Ukraine, France, United States, Saudi Arabia, and Austria respectively. The most drastic change was noticed in the Chinese market. China was the leading market in 2019 and stepped down to the 6th position in 2020 and as of 2021, China does not remain among the top ten source markets.
Ministry of Tourism has revealed that so far, 98% of employees working in resorts of Maldives have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 by the third week of 2022. The ministry aims to fully vaccinate the tourism sector.
