Male’, Maldives -08th June 2026 – In celebration of World Environment Day 2026, Sun Siyam Iru Veli has unveiled a new coral restoration programme, reinforcing its dedication to preserving the fragile marine ecosystems that define the Maldives. The initiative was officially introduced during the resort’s Ocean Week festivities, offering guests an opportunity to actively contribute to the protection and regeneration of the island’s vibrant underwater environment.
Located within the resort’s lagoon, newly designated coral propagation and planting sites have been established following the renewal of the resort’s coral planting licence. These carefully managed areas not only support reef restoration efforts but also allow visitors to witness the progress firsthand through guided snorkelling excursions led by the resort’s diving team. Through the resort’s Adopt a Coral programme, guests can participate directly in nurturing new coral growth, helping create habitats for marine life while supporting the natural recovery of surrounding reef systems.
The launch served as a fitting finale to Ocean Week, a series of immersive experiences designed to foster greater appreciation for the ocean and its remarkable biodiversity. Throughout the week, guests explored the wonders of the Maldivian marine world through a variety of educational and interactive activities.
One of the highlights was Marine Night, where participants gained fascinating insights into the diverse species that inhabit Maldivian waters. Discussions covered everything from colourful reef fish, sea anemones and nurse sharks commonly found around the resort’s house reef to the majestic whale sharks and manta rays that roam the wider atoll. The event underscored the ecological importance of these species and the need for continued conservation efforts.
Environmental stewardship extended beyond education, with guests and resort team members joining forces for a reef and lagoon clean-up campaign. The initiative focused on removing debris from surrounding waters while encouraging greater awareness of responsible marine practices. Taking place during the seasonal monsoon transition, the clean-up also highlighted the ongoing need to safeguard the delicate ecosystems that sustain island life.
Ocean Week coincided with several international environmental observances, including World Reef Awareness Day, World Environment Day and World Oceans Day, reflecting the resort’s broader sustainability vision under the Sun Siyam Cares programme.
For Sun Siyam Iru Veli, sustainability is more than a commitment—it is becoming an integral part of the guest journey. The newly launched coral planting experience offers travellers a meaningful way to connect with the Maldives beyond its scenic beauty, leaving behind a positive contribution that will continue to flourish beneath the surface for years to come.
Nestled in Dhaalu Atoll, the luxury resort combines laid-back island living with elevated experiences, offering spacious pool villas, extensive all-inclusive dining, wellness experiences and ocean adventures. With initiatives such as coral restoration now enriching the guest experience, visitors can enjoy the Maldives while actively contributing to the preservation of its most precious natural treasure—the ocean.
