Male’, Maldives, 29th April 2024 – Minister Faisal took part in the UN General Assembly High-level Thematic Event on Tourism, showcasing The Maldives’ dedication to sustainability and active involvement on the global stage. His participation during the UN Sustainability Week highlights The Maldives’ commitment to influencing the trajectory of tourism through global partnerships and sustainable practices.

During the event, Minister Faisal addressed the High-level Thematic Debate on Debt Sustainability and Socio-Economic Equality for All, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like The Maldives. He emphasized their vulnerability to climate change and economic fluctuations, advocating for debt relief, accessible financing, and reforms in the international financial system to support sustainable development in SIDS.

Expanding on this initiative, Minister Faisal presented The Maldives’ vision for a resilient and sustainable tourism sector at the High-Level Thematic Event on Tourism. He outlined a comprehensive strategy focused on resilience-building, innovation, and strengthened collaboration, with a primary emphasis on tackling climate change and public health concerns while ensuring the long-term viability of island tourism.

Additionally, Minister Faisal participated in a Ministerial Roundtable on Sustainable Tourism and the launch of the Statistical Framework for Measuring the Sustainability of Tourism. He highlighted The Maldives’ leadership in this critical area, emphasizing ongoing efforts to integrate environmental and social responsibility across all aspects of the industry.

Throughout the week, Minister Faisal engaged in productive discussions with international counterparts, including meetings with UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, UNGA President Dennis Francis, and tourism ministers from South Africa and Indonesia. These dialogues explored opportunities for collaborative action on sustainable tourism practices, climate resilience, and improved connectivity.

The Ministry of Tourism remains committed to establishing strong partnerships with international allies to ensure that tourism serves as a catalyst for positive global change. The Maldives’ proactive involvement at the UNGA High-Level Thematic Event on Tourism underscores this dedication, solidifying the nation’s role as a pioneer in shaping a more sustainable and prosperous future for the industry.
