Male’, Maldives, 17 August 2024 – The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, nestled in the serene Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, has proudly unveiled its latest green initiative—a solar power project aimed at significantly reducing its environmental impact.
Capitalizing on the Maldives’ abundant sunshine, the resort has installed 650 solar panels discreetly within the island’s lush landscape. These panels, now operational, generate approximately six hours of energy each day, allowing the resort to cut its diesel usage by 135,000 liters annually. This transition to solar energy is expected to reduce carbon emissions by a staggering 361,800 kg—equivalent to planting 16,400 trees.
Beyond its environmental benefits, this renewable energy shift will also bring substantial cost savings, with the resort projected to save over USD 135,000 each year.
This solar project is just one aspect of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s broader commitment to sustainability. The resort has also introduced innovative waste management practices, including a food composting machine that turns kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost for its gardens. Additionally, a bottle crusher on-site transforms broken glass into practical items like umbrella bases for the resort’s villas.
General Manager Vijay Kumar highlighted the significance of these initiatives, stating, “As an island resort, sustainability is key, and we are committed to creating solutions to minimize the impact we have on this beautiful ecosystem. The new panels will harness the abundant sunshine we are blessed with in the Maldives and reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel.”
