Male’, Maldives -09th June 2026 – World Ocean Day 2026 was celebrated with purpose and community spirit at Milaidhoo Maldives, as the boutique island resort welcomed students, teachers and parents from Kudarikilu School for an immersive educational programme centred on marine conservation and environmental stewardship.
Set within the internationally recognised UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, Milaidhoo used the occasion to highlight the importance of protecting the Maldives’ fragile marine ecosystems while encouraging the next generation to become active guardians of the ocean. This year’s World Ocean Day theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, a New Relationship with Our Ocean,” provided the foundation for a day filled with learning, exploration and hands-on conservation efforts.
The programme brought together 15 students alongside teachers and parents from neighbouring Kudarikilu Island. Guided by Milaidhoo’s marine conservation initiative, Ocean Stories, participants were introduced to the extraordinary biodiversity that thrives in the waters surrounding Baa Atoll. Through an engaging presentation led by resident marine biologist Nairika Bharucha, students gained valuable insights into the region’s coral reefs, marine species and the environmental challenges facing oceans across the globe.
The discussions also emphasised how individual actions, from responsible waste disposal to sustainable tourism practices, can directly influence the wellbeing of marine habitats. By connecting global environmental concerns with local realities, the session encouraged students to view conservation as a responsibility shared by everyone.
A highlight of the visit was a guided snorkelling excursion on Milaidhoo’s vibrant house reef. The experience allowed students to observe marine life and coral formations firsthand, transforming classroom concepts into real-world encounters. Witnessing the underwater ecosystem up close helped reinforce the importance of preserving these natural environments for future generations.
The educational journey continued with coral planting activities, where students actively contributed to the resort’s ongoing reef restoration programme. The initiative offered a practical understanding of the vital role coral reefs play in safeguarding coastlines, supporting fisheries, sustaining tourism and maintaining the ecological balance upon which island communities depend.
The day concluded with a celebratory gathering that brought together students, educators, parents and the Milaidhoo team. The occasion reflected a shared commitment to protecting the ocean and fostering stronger connections between local communities and the natural environment.
For the Maldives, where livelihoods, culture and identity remain deeply connected to the sea, initiatives such as these play a crucial role in cultivating environmental awareness among young people. Through continued collaboration with local communities, educational outreach and conservation projects, Milaidhoo Maldives remains committed to nurturing a greater appreciation for the marine world while helping safeguard one of the nation’s most valuable natural assets.
