Male’, Maldives -13th May 2026 – On 12 May 2026, the Maldives reinforced its presence within the Asia-Pacific tourism community as Visit Maldives Corporation (VMC) Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shiuree, participated in the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Annual General Meeting in Gyeongju, South Korea.
Attending in his capacity as a PATA Board Member, a position he has held since August 2025, Shiuree represented the Maldives during one of the region’s most significant tourism gatherings, held as part of the PATA Annual Summit 2026.
The annual gathering served as a platform for members to evaluate the association’s progress, outline future priorities, and exchange perspectives on the evolving landscape of global travel. Discussions centred on strengthening collaboration between destinations, advancing sustainable tourism practices, encouraging innovation, and addressing emerging challenges affecting the industry.
This year’s summit was held under the theme “Navigating Towards a Resilient Future” and attracted more than 550 delegates representing over 35 destinations. Participants included officials from tourism authorities, government agencies, airlines, hospitality brands, educational institutions, and international organisations.
Throughout the summit, attendees engaged in a series of governance meetings, policy dialogues, roundtable discussions, and conference sessions exploring critical topics influencing the future of tourism. Key themes included destination resilience, sustainable management strategies, digital transformation, and the changing dynamics of destination marketing in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.
Reflecting on the event, Shiuree highlighted the value of the discussions in understanding the shifting priorities of the tourism sector, particularly as destinations continue to navigate uncertainty caused by ongoing geopolitical developments. He noted that global events increasingly influence travel demand and consumer behaviour, making resilience and adaptability essential considerations for tourism destinations.
According to Shiuree, platforms such as PATA play a crucial role in fostering cooperation and knowledge-sharing among destinations, enabling tourism leaders to stay aligned with emerging trends and market expectations. Insights gained from the summit, he explained, will contribute to refining the Maldives’ destination marketing strategies and strengthening long-term partnerships that support sustainable tourism growth.
The Maldives’ participation in the PATA Annual General Meeting underscores its continued commitment to engaging with regional tourism leaders and contributing to collaborative efforts aimed at advancing the tourism industry across Asia and the Pacific. As global travel continues to evolve, such engagement ensures the destination remains well-positioned to adapt, innovate, and maintain its standing as one of the world’s most sought-after island destinations.
